Am 8. März 2026 gingen Tausende Menschen in Berlin auf die Straße, um an der Demonstration „Rise in Rage, Build in Struggle” teilzunehmen, die von der Alliance of Internationalist Feminists organisiert wurde. Wir kamen als antikoloniale, antiimperialistische, antikapitalistische und antipatriarchale Allianz internationalistischer Queer-Feministinnen zusammen, um ein klares NEIN zu imperialistischen Kriegen zu sagen. Von Palästina bis weit darüber hinaus stehen wir gegen die koloniale Herrschaft, die ganze Nationen in Brand setzt und die Zivilbevölkerung bombardiert, um imperiale Kontrolle zu erlangen. Die Demonstrierenden solidarisierten sich mit allen Völkern, die sich gegen imperialistische Aggression wehren, und forderten ein sofortiges Ende des andauernden Völkermords in Palästina und anderen besetzten Gebieten.

Die Dokumentation der Polizeigewalt und Festnahmen stammt von unserem Dokumentationsteam, das die Demonstration begleitet hat. Die Dokumentation besteht aus Augenzeug:innenberichten, Aussagen und Erklärungen der betroffenen Personen sowie Video- und Fotoaufnahmen.

Trotz des massiven und friedlichen Charakters der Demonstration setzte die Berliner Polizei während der gesamten Protestaktion aggressive Einschüchterungs- und Unterdrückungstaktiken ein. Von Beginn an positionierten sich Polizeibeamte in kleinen Gruppen in der Menge, schufen eine Atmosphäre der Einschüchterung und versuchten, die kollektive Energie der Demonstrierenden zu stören.

Die Polizei nahm während der Demonstration 16 Demonstrierende fest, hauptsächlich rassifizierte Demonstrierende. Einmal mehr nutzt die Polizei Festnahmen als repressives Instrument, das die Versammlungsfreiheit gefährdet und abweichende Meinungen zur militaristischen und repressiven Politik Deutschlands und der USA kriminalisiert.

Die Polizei begann mit Festnahmen am Herrmannplatz und stürmte anschließend die Menge der Demonstrierenden auf der Sonnenallee. Diese gezielte Repression ist Teil einer systematischen Kriminalisierung des palästinensischen und arabischen Viertels. Am Ende der Demonstration schüchterte die Polizei die Organisierenden ein und nahm gezielt palästinensische Aktivist:innen ins Visier, die palästinensische Flaggen und Trommeln trugen. 

Insbesondere hat unser Dokumentationsteam folgende Formen von Polizeigewalt festgestellt:

• Gewaltsame Festnahme von Demonstrierenden ohne klaren Grund für die Festnahme

• Stürmung der Demonstration

• Schläge und Prügel gegen Demonstrierende

• Anwendung von Schmerzgriffen und Würgegriffen während der Festnahmen

• Gewaltsames Zu-Boden-Drücken von Demonstrierenden während der Festnahmen

• Brutales Herauszerren von Demonstrierenden aus der Menge

• Verweigerung des Zugangs zu den Festgenommenen, Verhinderung medizinischer und rechtlicher Hilfe

Trotz der Polizeigewalt zeigte die Demonstration eine bemerkenswerte kollektive Stärke und Widerstandsfähigkeit. Die Menge hielt der Unterdrückung stand und schränkte die Wirksamkeit der Polizeitaktiken erheblich ein. Zweimal bereitete sich die Polizei auf größere Angriffe vor, konnte diese jedoch aufgrund der starken Solidarität und des Widerstands der Teilnehmer:innen nicht durchführen.

Vergleicht man diese Demonstration mit denen der letzten Jahre, scheint es, dass entweder die Polizei ihre Strategie geändert hat oder unser kollektiver Widerstand sie gezwungen hat, ihre Unterdrückungstaktik anzupassen. Die massive Beteiligung und der organisierte Widerstand senden eine klare Botschaft, dass staatliche Gewalt unseren Kampf für Gerechtigkeit nicht aufhalten wird.

Wir verurteilen die Polizeigewalt und willkürlichen Verhaftungen auf das Schärfste. Die Anwendung übermäßiger Gewalt gegen friedliche Demonstrierende ist eine Verletzung grundlegender Menschenrechte und demokratischer Freiheiten. Die gezielte Verfolgung rassifizierter  Menschen offenbart den repressiven Charakter des deutschen Staates, der versucht, Dissens und Solidarität mit der palästinensischen Befreiungsbewegung zu kriminalisieren.

Wir fordern:

1. Ein sofortiges Ende der Polizeigewalt und die Rechenschaftspflicht für Missbrauch:

• Die sofortige Einstellung aller unverhältnismäßigen und brutalen Polizeitaktiken. Der Einsatz von willkürlicher Gewalt, Schmerzgriffen und Würgegriffen verstößt gegen die verfassungsmäßige Garantie der körperlichen Unversehrtheit (Artikel 2 Absatz 2 des Grundgesetzes – GG) und verletzt den für alle staatlichen Handlungen geltenden Grundsatz der Verhältnismäßigkeit.

• Die sofortige Suspendierung aller Beamt:innen, die an übermäßiger Gewaltanwendung und Misshandlungen beteiligt waren, bis zum Abschluss der Ermittlungen. Dies ist ein notwendiger Schritt, um das Rechtsstaatsprinzip aufrechtzuerhalten und sicherzustellen, dass Beamte, die ihre Pflicht zum Schutz der Bürger verletzen, nicht vor den Konsequenzen geschützt werden.

• Die Einrichtung einer vollständig unabhängigen, transparenten Untersuchung der Polizeibrutalität. Dies ist erforderlich, um die positive Verpflichtung des Staates gemäß Artikel 1 Absatz 1 GG (Menschenwürde) und Artikel 2 Absatz 2 GG zu erfüllen, Verstöße gegen diese Grundrechte wirksam zu untersuchen und zu ahnden.

   2. Institutionelle Reformen für sichere Versammlungen:

• Die formelle Einführung robuster Kinderschutzmaßnahmen bei allen öffentlichen Demonstrationen. Dies ist eine gesetzliche Verpflichtung, die sich aus der Ratifizierung der UN-Kinderrechtskonvention durch Deutschland ergibt, wonach das Wohl des Kindes bei allen Maßnahmen, die Kinder betreffen, vorrangig zu berücksichtigen ist.

• Die Entwicklung und Durchsetzung konkreter Schutzmaßnahmen für gefährdete Gruppen (einschließlich rassistisch diskriminierter Menschen, Frauen, Transgender, Nicht-Binäre, Queers und Geflüchteter). Der Staat hat die Pflicht, das Versammlungsrecht aller Teilnehmer:innen (Artikel 8 GG) und die Freiheit von Diskriminierung zu schützen und muss Bedingungen schaffen, unter denen jeder seine Rechte ausüben kann, ohne gezielte Repressionen befürchten zu müssen.

• Ein Ende der Kriminalisierung legitimer Proteste und der Strafverfolgung von Polizeibeamt:innen, die während Demonstrationen Menschenrechte verletzen.

3. Zivilgesellschaftliche Kontrolle:

• Wir rufen alle nationalen und internationalen zivilgesellschaftlichen und Menschenrechtsorganisationen dazu auf, das Muster der Polizeigewalt unabhängig zu dokumentieren und zu untersuchen. Dieser Aufruf steht im Einklang mit der wesentlichen demokratischen Funktion der zivilgesellschaftlichen Kontrolle. Ihre Arbeit ist entscheidend, um dem abschreckenden Effekt illegaler Polizeigewalt auf die Meinungsfreiheit (Artikel 5 GG) und die Versammlungsfreiheit (Artikel 8 GG) entgegenzuwirken und die öffentliche Rechenschaftspflicht sicherzustellen, wenn staatliche Mechanismen versagen.

• Der Schutz des Rechts von Journalist:innen, Demonstrationen ohne Einmischung zu dokumentieren, wie es in Artikel 19 der Allgemeinen Erklärung der Menschenrechte garantiert ist.

Wir solidarisieren uns mit allen Betroffenen der polizeilichen Repression. Wir rufen die internationale Gemeinschaft, Menschenrechtsorganisationen und die Zivilgesellschaft dazu auf, die anhaltende Polizeigewalt gegen friedliche Demonstrierende in Berlin zu dokumentieren und zu verurteilen.

Trotz staatlicher Gewalt und Einschüchterung wird unsere Bewegung immer stärker. Wir werden weiterhin mit Wut aufbegehren und unseren Kampf fortsetzen, bis alle Formen der Unterdrückung besiegt sind.

10,000 People March Against Imperialist Wars - Berlin Police Repression Targets Racialized People and Activists

On March 8, 2026, thousands of people took to the streets in Berlin for the demonstration "Rise in Rage, Build in Struggle," organized by the Alliance of Internationalist Feminists. We came together as an anti-colonial, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, and anti-patriarchal alliance of internationalist queer-feminists to prove a resounding NO to imperialist wars. From Palestine to beyond, we stand against the colonial domination that is putting entire nations to the torch, bombing civilian populations for imperial control. The demonstrators stood in solidarity with all peoples resisting imperialist aggression and demanded an immediate end to the ongoing genocide in Palestine and other occupied territories.

The documentation of police violence and arrests is compiled our documentation team, who accompanied the demonstration. The documentation consists of eyewitness reports, testimonies and statements of the affected individuals, as well as video and photo evidence.

Despite the massive and peaceful character of the demonstration, Berlin police deployed aggressive tactics of intimidation and repression throughout the protest. From the beginning, police officers positioned themselves in small groups throughout the crowd, creating an atmosphere of intimidation and attempting to disrupt the collective energy of the demonstrators.

The police arrested 16 protestors during the demonstration, mainly racialized protestors. Once again the police uses arrests  as a repressive instrument endangering  the freedom of assembly and criminalizing dissent with the militarist and repressive policies of Germany and the US.

The police started arresting people at Herrmannplatz and continued to storm the crowd of protestors on Sonnenallee. This targeted repression is part of a pattern of systematic crimnalization of the Palestinian and Arab neighborhood. At the end of the protest, the police intimidated the organisers and targeted specifically Palestinian activitst holding Palestinian flags and drums. 

Specifically, our documentation team recorded the following forms of police violence:

• Violently arresting protesters without any clear reason for the arrest

• Storming the protest

• Punching and beating up protesters

• Using pain grips and chokeholds during arrests

• Forcing protesters violently to the ground during arrests

• Dragging protesters brutally from the crowd

• Denying access to the arrested, preventing medical and legal support

Despite the police violence, the demonstration showed remarkable collective strength and resilience. The crowd stood firm against repression, significantly limiting the effectiveness of police tactics. On two occasions, police prepared for larger-scale attacks but were unable to proceed due to the powerful solidarity and resistance demonstrated by the participants.

Comparing this demonstration with the ones that took place in the last years, it appears that either the police have changed their strategy or our collective resistance has forced them to adapt their tactics of repression. The massive turnout and organized resistance sent a clear message that state violence will not deter our struggle for justice.

We condemn the police violence and arbitrary arrests in the strongest possible terms. The use of excessive force against peaceful demonstrators is a violation of fundamental human rights and democratic freedoms. The targeting of racialized people and activists reveals the repressive nature of the German state, which seeks to criminalize dissent and solidarity with Palestinian liberation.

We demand:

1. An Immediate End to Police Violence and Accountability for Abuse:

• The immediate cessation of all disproportionate and brutal police tactics. The use of indiscriminate force, pain grips, and chokeholds violates the constitutional guarantee of bodily integrity (Article 2(2) of the Basic Law - GG) and breaches the Principle of Proportionality mandated for all state action.

• The immediate suspension, pending investigation, of all officers involved in excessive force and mistreatment. This is a necessary step to uphold the Rule of Law (Rechtsstaatsprinzip) and ensure that public officials who violate their duty to protect citizens are not shielded from consequences.

• The establishment of a fully independent, transparent investigation into the police brutality. This is required to fulfill the state's positive obligation under Article 1(1) GG (Human Dignity) and Article 2(2) GG to effectively investigate and address violations of these fundamental rights.

2. Institutional Reforms for Safe Assembly:

• The formal introduction of robust child protection measures at all public demonstrations. This is a legal obligation arising from Germany's ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which requires that the best interests of the child be a primary consideration in all actions concerning children.

• The development and enforcement of concrete protective measures for vulnerable groups (including racialized people, activists, women, trans, non-binary, queer, and refugee individuals). The state has a duty to protect all participants' right to assembly (Article 8 GG) and freedom from discrimination, and must create conditions where everyone can exercise their rights without fear of targeted repression.

• An end to the criminalization of legitimate protest and the prosecution of police officers who violate human rights during demonstrations.

3. Civil Society Oversight:

•    - We call upon all national and international civil society and human rights organizations to independently document and investigate the pattern of police violence. This call aligns with the essential democratic function of civil oversight. Their work is crucial to counter the chilling effect that illegal police violence has on the freedom of expression (Article 5 GG) and freedom of assembly (Article 8 GG), and to ensure public accountability where state mechanisms fail.

• The protection of journalists' right to document demonstrations without interference, as guaranteed under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We stand in solidarity with all those affected by police repression. We call upon the international community, human rights organizations, and civil society to document and condemn the ongoing police violence against peaceful demonstrators in Berlin.

Despite state violence and intimidation, our movement grows stronger. We will continue to rise in rage and build in struggle until all forms of oppression are defeated
